| Blood Exchange Transfusion Tray |
| The Exchange Transfusion Tray is used for the removal of high concentrations of toxins in the blood which are not otherwise removable by diuresis, dialysis or chelation (binding with metal ion). This procedure may also be carried out in babies with abnormally elevated metabolic products – bilirubin, ammonia, amino acids. In addition, drug overdoses, bacterial toxins, life-threatening electrolyte and fluid imbalances may also necessitate this course of action,as well as for the regulation of the level and type of hemoglobin. Blood exchange transfusions are usually carried out via the umbilical vein, but may also be carried out using one of the umbilical arteries. The 7Fr catheter will usually be used for exchanges via the vein, and the 5Fr for exchanges via the artery. |
